Seam weld universal connections and Specialist Durability

Seam weld universal connections require additional options before you can use them in Specialist Durability solutions. Thus, unlike spot weld universal connections, you cannot use manually created seam weld universal connections in Specialist Durability. Instead, you must generate the seam welds using one of the following methods.

  • Use the Import Durability Welds command to import shell-shell, shell-solid, and solid-solid seam weld connections using xMCF (extended master connection format). This method imports the connection information such as type of weld technology, type of weld, flanges, and so on, and it also imports the durability simulation objects. For valid seam welds, this method creates the durability seam weld sets for you. Seam welds that share the same simulation recovery object are placed in the same set.Note: Both the Stress Based Recovery and Notch Stress Configuration simulation objects are imported, but only the Stress Based Recovery is exported.

  • Use the Auto-detect Seam Welds command to detect existing shell-shell and shell-solid seam weld connection elements in your model. This method finds the existing seam weld connection elements and creates the universal seam weld connections so that you can include the seam welds in Durability Seam Weld Sets.

After you use either of these methods, you can create or edit the Durability Seam Weld Sets and then include the seam weld sets in a Specialist Durability solution.

Seam Weld Connection dialog box

Because durability seam weld connections point to universal seam weld connections, the seam weld connections that you import or auto-detect use the same Seam Weld Connection dialog box as seam welds that are created manually.

The following table outlines the options that are available for manually creating seam weld universal connections and for importing or using the Auto-detect Seam Welds command to create them.

  • When you manually create a seam weld universal connection and want to mesh it, use the options under the Options for creating universal connection seam welds column.

  • When you import an xMCF file or use the Auto-detect Seam Welds command to create a seam weld universal connection, more options are available that you must define in order for the seam weld to be used by Specialist Durability. These options are under the Options for imported seam weld connections or auto-detected seam welds column.
