Stopping Criteria
Maximum Number of Iterations Specifies the maximum number of iterations the optimization does before stopping.
Minimum Improvement Specifies the value for the minimum improvement. The optimization stops when the change in the total error between two successive iterations is less than the minimum improvement value. This value is disregarded for the genetic algorithm.
Optimization Parameters
Overall Design Variable Weight (%) Specifies the overall weight of the term penalizing larger design variable changes. If the change in design variables from the initial values does not matter, set this value to 0.
Design Variable Linear Range (%) Specifies the maximum design variable change that is possible for each optimization iteration. If your goal is to find a local optimum design point close to the initial design point, you should use a design variable linear range that is around 5% or less.If your goal is to find a global optimum design point, you should use a design variable linear range approaching 100%. The ability of the Model Update solution process to find a global optimum is limited, because the accuracy of the design variable sensitivities decreases as the distance from the initial design point increases.
Optimizer
Type Controls the type of optimization algorithm that is used. The Least Squares algorithm minimizes the objective function based on the square of the target errors and design variable changes. The Steepest Descent algorithm minimizes the objective function based on the absolute value of the target errors and design variable changes. This algorithm performs several descent steps (inner iterations) where it changes the design variable with the highest sensitivity. The Genetic Algorithm minimizes the objective function based on techniques inspired by evolutionary biology.
Auto-filter Design Variables Appears when Type is set to Least Squares.Eliminates the least sensitive design variable at each iteration.Clear this check box to keep all design variables at each iteration.
Mode Appears when Type is set to Steepest Descent.Controls how the design variable sensitivities enter the objective function. In the Linear mode, the design variable changes enter the objective function linearly. In the Fractional mode, a fractional term is used that prevents any design variables from changing by a much larger amount than the remaining design variables within an iteration.
Maximum Inner Iterations Appears when Type is set to Steepest Descent.Specifies the maximum number of descent steps (inner iterations) per iteration.
Step (%) Appears when Type is set to Steepest Descent.Specifies the step size of the descent step.
Population Appears when Type is set to Genetic Algorithm.Specifies the number of individuals in the population.
Generations Appears when Type is set to Genetic Algorithm.Specifies the number of generations for which the population will evolve.
Genes Appears when Type is set to Genetic Algorithm.Specifies the number of genes (numerical digits) that can change in an individual in each generation.
