Solver types (Simcenter Samcef)
Depending on the analysis type and solution type, you can choose among several solvers to solve a model. The following tables give information on these solvers.
Solver types
| Solver | Description |
|---|---|
| Sparse, Sparse (BCSLIB) (thermal) | This is the Boeing multi-frontal solver. This solver is recommended for medium to large problems and provides good performances. In most situations, it dramatically reduces the cost of solving linear systems of equations. This is the recommended choice for Linear Static, Modal, Buckling, Standalone Buckling, Linear Transient Response, and Linear Harmonic Response solutions. In a Nonlinear solution, this can be a good choice if the number of degrees of freedom is greater than 5000. |
| Frontal | The Frontal method is an old but stable out-of-core solver. It is reserved for very small and difficult models and should not be used as a default choice. |
| Skyline | This is a method in which no pivoting strategy is performed. Thus, it is reserved for small problems (the number of degrees of freedom is less than 5000). |
| MUMPS Parallel, Sparse (MUMPS) (thermal) | This the Multi-frontal Massively Parallel sparse direct solver that can be used when the Parallel mode is activated in the solution's Solver Parameters. The parallel solver is useful for solving large problems (>10e5 degrees of freedom) on a small number of processors (between 1 and 4 processors) and very large problems (>10e6 degrees of freedom) in parallel on shared memory or distributed memory machines. |
| Auto | This option lets the solver choose the most suitable solver according to the model's characteristics. In a Nonlinear or Heat Transfer solution, this is the recommended choice. |
