Defining contact properties (Abaqus Dynamic Explicit analyses)
When you define a Surface-to-Surface Contact or Edge to Edge Contact simulation object for an Abaqus Dynamic Explicit or an Axisymmetric Dynamic Explicit analysis, you can create a Contact Property modeling object to define contact properties, interactions, and behaviors of the surfaces that may contact or interact during the analysis, including defining an initial clearance for the first step of the solution. For example, the options in the Contact Property dialog box let you control:
Contact surface weighting (balanced or pure master-slave).
The sliding formulation (finite, small, or infinitesimal).
Initial clearance for the first step of the solution.
Contact constraint enforcement methods (kinematic or penalty contact).
A mechanical surface interaction model using the Surface Interaction modeling object. The Surface Interaction modeling object, in turn, can include the Friction and Surface Behavior modeling objects.
Note:
The default contact property model assumes a hard contact in the normal direction, no friction, and no thermal interactions.
Contact properties are assigned at the beginning of the analysis and propagate through all analysis steps in which the contact interaction is active. You can only modify the friction model across steps.
Summary of modeling objects
The following modeling objects work together to define the interactions of Surface-to-Surface Contact and Edge to Edge Contact simulation objects.
| Modeling object | Description | Keywords |
|---|---|---|
| Contact Property | Manages the properties, interactions, and behaviors of contact pairs. | *CONTACT PAIR |
| Surface Interaction | Defines a mechanical surface interaction model. | *SURFACE INTERACTION |
| Friction | Sets friction properties for contact surface interactions. | *FRICTION |
| Surface Behavior | Defines surface behavior for non-default hard contact. | *SURFACE BEHAVIOR |
Associated Abaqus keywords
The options in the Contact Property dialog box correspond to parameters for the Abaqus *CONTACT PAIR, *SURFACE INTERACTION, *SURFACE BEHAVIOR, and *FRICTION keywords. For more information, see the Abaqus Keywords Reference Guide and Mechanical contact properties in the Abaqus Analysis User's Guide.
