Thermostat

Use a Thermostat modeling object to control the activation or deactivation of loads or fans according to a sensor that you specify. You can define the temperature sensor on thermal or flow elements, or a non-geometric element. You can associate the thermal and flow elements to a selected geometry or group.

The sensor temperature is computed differently depending on the element type:

  • For thermal elements, the sensor temperature is the arithmetic mean of elemental temperatures.

  • For flow elements, the sensor temperature, Tmean, is the volumetric average of elemental temperatures, Ti:T_{mean} = \frac{\sum_i{T_i V_i}}{\sum_i{V_i}}where Vi is the element volume.

You must always use a Thermostat modeling object together with either a Thermal Loads load or a Flow Boundary Condition simulation object.

Thermostats are fully functional only for transient analysis.

Warning:

The physics of the model defines the frequency at which a thermostat controller oscillates. The time step that you specify, must be small enough to capture these oscillations. For models that have thermostats that oscillate fast and have large time steps, select the implicit transient integration method.

Controlling heat loads

When you use a Thermostat modeling object in a Thermal Loads load, the modeling object assumes the load is turned off at time 0. It then checks the temperature of the sensor at each time step.

  • If the temperature falls below the cut-in temperature, the thermal load is activated.

  • If the temperature rises above the cut-off temperature, the thermal load is deactivated.

Negative heat loads are activated when the temperature of the sensor is above the cut-in temperature and deactivated when the temperature of the sensor is below the cut-off temperature.
