Laminate Composites > Creating a laminate physical property

Validating laminate properties and strength

Laminate Composites computes the properties of your laminate, allowing you to assess its mass, stiffness, stability and thermal properties.

Validating laminate properties

The following commands in the Validation group of the Laminate Modeler and Solid Laminate Modeler dialog boxes let you validate laminate properties:

  • Laminate Information to Text Window displays the results in the Information window.

  • Laminate Information to Spreadsheet sends the results to a spreadsheet.

  • Laminate Information to CSV File sends the results to a CSV file.

The same results of the laminate properties validation and an echo of the input data are shown in all cases.

Validating laminate strength

Before you launch a finite element simulation, using the Analyze Laminate Strength command, you can verify the ability of your laminate to withstand the following loading conditions:

  • Membrane forces

  • Bending moments

  • Transverse shear forces

  • Temperature loading

This may be especially important if laminate coupons are fabricated and tested against any of these loading conditions.

You can export the results to a spreadsheet or a CSV file.

You can only analyze laminate strength of a Laminate physical property.

Displaying stress or strain through laminate thickness

Use the Plot Stress and Strain through Laminate Thickness command in the Laminate Strength Analysis dialog box to display the stress or strain component in the ply (12) or the laminate (XY) coordinate system as a function of laminate thickness. You can visually identify the highly stressed or strained plies in your laminate.

In the plot area of the Stress/Strain through Laminate Thickness dialog box, red, blue, and green symbols are used.

  • The red symbols correspond to the bottom of each ply.

  • The blue symbols correspond to the middle of each ply.

  • The green symbols correspond to the top of each ply.

Ply failure envelope

The Plot Failure Envelopes command opens the Failure Envelope Display dialog box where the software displays the ply failure envelope that shows how much stress a ply can withstand under combined loading.

In order to view the envelopes, you must:

  • Define ply allowable stresses or strains.

  • Select a failure theory.

You can only display ply failure envelope of a Laminate physical property.

Displaying laminate information

The following commands in the Validation group of the Laminate Modeler and Solid Laminate Modeler dialog boxes let you quickly validate the laminate properties by generating information windows that display the laminate information:

  • List Stiffness Matrices

  • List Compliances Matrices

  • List Equivalent Properties
