British Standards

In the catalogs of the British Standards the joints are divided into different classes. For each class of seam weld a corresponding design SN-curve is determined. An example of such a catalog entry is given in the following figure. The classification of the seam welds depends on the following:

  • The geometrical arrangement and proportions of the detail

  • The direction of fluctuating stress relative to the detail

  • The location of possible crack initiation at the detail

  • Methods of manufacture and detail
