Automatically setting the correct analysis and solution (Simcenter Samcef)

When you import a Simcenter Samcef model, Simcenter 3D analyzes several Samcef solution commands (and their related parameters) to discover which type of analysis and solution the model refers to.

This automatic analysis is done when the Automatic Choice check box is selected in the Analysis and Solution group of the File Import dialog box.

If it fails, a message is issued and a default choice is suggested. However, you can stop the import and clear the Automatic Choice check box to manually define the Analysis Type and Solution Type for your model.

Note:

If you approximately set the Analysis Type and Solution Type, some imported data (like loads or simulation objects) may become inactive (or may be rejected) because they are not available in Simcenter 3D for the analysis and solution you manually set.

We recommend that the imported model contains the solution parameters that allow it to be correctly solved in Simcenter Samcef solvers.

How the Automatic Choice method defines the Analysis Type

When the Automatic Choice check box is selected, the import follows the following process to automatically set the Analysis Type to either a structural (Structural or Axisymmetric and Other 2D Structural) type or to a thermal (Thermal or Axisymmetric Thermal) type.

First, the import chooses between a structural or a thermal analysis default type:

  1. If a valid thermal .HYP hypothesis is found, the default Thermal analysis type is activated.

  2. Otherwise, the default Structural analysis type is activated.

  3. If no valid Samcef .HYP hypothesis is found, the import searches for a .SUB MECA 42 Samcef entry:If this entry is found, the default Thermal analysis type is set.Otherwise, the default Structural analysis type is set.

Then, the import refines the analysis type by checking the existence of axisymmetric elements. It also sets the 2D Solid Option accordingly:

  1. If axisymmetric elements are found and if the import can determine in which definition plane these elements are:Analysis Type is set to Axisymmetric and Other 2D Structural or Axisymmetric Thermal depending on the default analysis type found above. The 2D Solid Option is set according to the definition plane of the element.

  2. If axisymmetric elements are found but the import cannot determine the definition plane of these elements, the import searches for a .ALGO AXER - AXES - Samcef entry:If this entry is found, the Analysis Type and the 2D Solid Option are set as above.Otherwise, no axisymmetric option is retained. The Analysis Type retains its default Structural or Thermal status.

  3. If no axisymmetric elements are found, the Analysis Type retains its default Structural or Thermal status.

How the Automatic Choice method defines the Solution Type for thermal analyses

For a thermal analysis, the only Solution Type is Heat Transfer.

How the Automatic Choice method defines the Solution Type for structural analyses

The import searches for a .SUB subcase Samcef entry.

If this entry exists, the Solution Type is set to Nonlinear Analysis.

On the contrary, if no .SUB entry exists, the import searches for the following Samcef commands:

  • .SAM NALG 5.

  • .SAM NVAL, .ALGO LANCNVA, .ALGO V1, or .ALGO V2.

  • .ALGO PARTIMP, .ALGO MEFIMP, .ALGO JACCEPT, or .ALGO DECLOAD.

  • .DGE IRDY.

and performs the following checks:

  1. If none of these entries exists, the Solution Type is set to Linear Static Analysis.

  2. If one of these entries exists:If a .DGE IRDY entry is found, the Solution Type is set as follows:If .DGE IRDY is 11 or 12, the Solution Type is set to Linear Transient Response Analysis. If .DGE IRDY is 20, 22, or 223, the Solution Type is set to Linear Harmonic Response Analysis. If a .SAM IFR 19 Samcef entry exists, the import looks for loads in the model:If a load exists in the model, the Solution Type is set to Buckling Analysis. If no load exists in the model, the Solution Type is set to Standalone Buckling Analysis. If no .SAM IFR 19 entry is found, the Solution Type is set to Modal Analysis.

Unsupported Samcef solutions

The Automatic Choice method does not work with an imported Simcenter Samcef model that contains Mapping, Cyclic Symmetry Recombination, Superelement Creation, or Superelement Recovery Simcenter Samcef solutions.

Unsupported parameters

Samcef command Unsupported parameters
.GEL, .ALGO, .SAM If a solution parameter is not supported in the Simcenter Samcef environment, it is stored as a User Parameter field in the User page of the solution.
.SUBCASE If a subcase parameter is not supported in the Simcenter Samcef environment, it is stored as a User Parameter field in the User page of the subcase step.

For more information, see the .SAM, .ALGO, .SUBCASE, and .DGE commands in the Samcef documentation.
