Define modal damping

  1. In the Simulation Navigator, locate the node for your Response Dynamics solution process (indicated with the icon).

  2. Under the Modal Representation node, select Normal Modes.

  3. You can edit the modal damping ratio for all normal modes or for selected individual modes. To define damping for all normal modes — Right-click Normal Modes and choose Edit Damping Factor. To define damping for individual modes — In the list of modes that appears in the Response Dynamics Details View subpanel, select the modes for which to adjust the damping. Use the Ctrl or Shift keys to select multiple modes. Right-click the selected modes and choose Edit Damping Factor.

  4. In the Edit Damping Factor dialog box, enter the percentage of Viscous and/or Hysteretic damping to apply to the selected mode(s).

  5. Click OK.

  6. You can view the contribution percentage of modal damping in the %Hysteretic and %Viscous columns. The Damped Frequency column shows the effect of all damping (modal and physical damping) on the normal mode frequency.
