Initial stress and strain (Simcenter Samcef)
In Linear, Modal, or Nonlinear structural analyses in the Simcenter Samcef environment, you can use the Initial Stress/Strain load to define initial stresses and strains loads on elements.
You can apply these loads on 1D, 2D shells, or 3D elements. You cannot apply these loads on 0D elements and 2D membranes.
The load values are expressed in the elements material axes system. Due to the difference between the default material axes on 2D and 3D elements, we do not recommend mixing 2D and 3D elements in the same load.
On composite elements, you can define these loads at the ply level.
Unbalanced loads in linear solutions
In Linear and Modal solutions, these loads are unbalanced and act as classical loads.
Self-Balanced loads in nonlinear analyses
In Nonlinear structural analyses, if left unbalanced, these loads can induce nodal displacements and/or stresses in elements for which no initial state was introduced. This can lead to an unwanted initial state of the model.
You can use the Defined Data Is Self-Balanced check box in the Initial Stress/Strain dialog box, combined with the Initial Static Computation (.ALGO IREF) check box in the Solution dialog box, in two different ways:
If you are sure that all the stress/strain initial loads that you define are balanced (that is, in equilibrium), you can select the Defined Data Is Self-Balanced check box. This is the case, for example, when you manually add the stresses/strains in your model from stress/strain data computed on the same model in an external source.
In all other cases, clear the Defined Data Is Self-Balanced check box, and ensure that the Initial Static Computation (.ALGO IREF) check box in the Analysis page of the solution is selected to compute an initial static configuration of your model prior to the solve.
For more informatio, see the .ALGO command in the Simcenter Samcef solver documentation.
