Propagating calculations

You can use the Propagate command to create one or more editable copies of a calculation. The number of copies that the software creates depends on the number of FE entities, geometric entities, or groups that you select in the Propagate dialog box. The software creates a calculation for each FE entity, geometric entity, or group that you select. Thus, the propagated calculations are identical to the source calculation except for the entities from which the software obtains the results for the propagated calculations.

The propagated calculations appear in the Simulation Navigator with the other calculations. You can edit propagated calculations from the Simulation Navigator or the Calculation Manager dialog box. All of the parameters are editable except the method.

For information on editing calculations, see Editing margin of safety calculations.

Results set for propagated calculations

When you propagate a calculation, the values that the software uses to calculate the margin of safety for each propagated calculation are extracted from the set of results that the software creates from the results for all the nodes or elements associated with that calculation by either direct selection or indirect selection through parent/child relationships or groups.

For information on indirect selection through parent/child relationships or groups, see Parent/child behavior in margin of safety calculations.

Specifying whether nodal or elemental results are used in a propagated calculation

The result type for a calculation determines whether the software uses results from nodes or elements in the calculation. When you propagate a calculation, the result type for the propagated calculations is inherited from the source calculation. Thus, if in the Load Extraction dialog box for the source calculation, Result Type is set to a nodal or element-nodal result, the software uses results for nodes in the propagated calculations. If Result Type is set to an elemental result, the software uses results for elements in the propagated calculations.

For example, suppose that for the source calculation, Result Type is set to an elemental result type. If from the Propagate dialog box you set Select to Elements, and select elements directly from the graphics window, the software creates a propagated calculation for each element that you select. The results set for each propagated calculation is the elemental result for the corresponding element.

If from the Propagate dialog box you set Select to Edges, and select polygon edges directly from the graphics window, the software creates a propagated calculation for each polygon edge that you select. The results set for each propagated calculation is comprised of the elemental results for the elements that have an element edge that lies on the corresponding polygon edge.

Because propagated calculations are editable, you can optionally change the result type of propagated calculations.
