Comparison of the results for direct vs. nominal structural stress approach

In [1] the obtained results for the direct structural stress approach are compared to the reported results of the force-based nominal structural stress approach, given in [3]. For a stress ratio R = 0, DSSA yields a spot weld fatigue strength value of σr,E = 208 MPa for the master SN-curve, normalized by . The force-based NSSA reported a fatigue strength value of σr,E = 145 MPa for the same set of test-specimens, which is a significant amount of 43% and explains the conservative results that are often obtained with the nominal structural stress approach. This significant difference can only be explained by the assumptions and simplifications of the nominal structural stress approach, since Rupp's model claims to describe the underlying mechanical model according to Radaj's concept.
