MINDLIN shell (Simcenter Samcef)
Definition
This element superimposes a Marguerre membrane and a plate element. It allows you to model transverse shear deformable thick shells. It is an extension of Kirchhoff–Love plate theory.
In the Mindlin's theory, there is a linear variation of displacement across the shell's thickness, but this thickness does not change during deformation. An additional assumption is that the normal stress through the thickness is ignored (plane stress condition).
This shell exists as a linear triangle and quadrangle. It can be used in linear analyses as well as in nonlinear analyses. It can support linear and nonlinear materials, can be multilayered, and offers offsets.
Specific options
With the MIND card option of the Mesh Associated Data, you control the flexural behavior, the geometrical stiffness, and the in-plane rotational stiffness. For more details, see About the MIND Mesh Associated Data property (Simcenter Samcef).
With the Compute Curvature for Mindlin Shells and Beams (.ALGO MINO) check box on the Analysis page of the solution, you can control the curvature in the element (the Mindlin mean normal at nodes): normals at element's corner nodes are computed and induced a curvature at the element level. You can specify a Threshold Angle to avoid big changes in normals orientations at nodes that are shared between two elements. For more details, see the MINO parameter in the .ALGO command in the Simcenter Samcef solver documentation.
For more information on the offsets, see MINDLIN shell element page in the Simcenter Samcef solver documentation.
