Face from Mesh example: Connecting a legacy mesh to new geometry

You can use the Face from Mesh command when you need to associate FE-only data, such Nastran bulk data, to new geometry. The following example shows how you can use Face from Mesh to connect an existing mesh that is not associated to any geometry to a new geometry configuration.

In the following example, we will associate an existing mesh of CQUAD4 elements that was imported from a Nastran .dat file (A) to some updated geometry (B).

  1. In the Simulation Navigator, right-click the FEM file and select Replace Ideal/Master Part.

  2. In the Replace Ideal/Master Part dialog box, click the Associate to Master Part check box and select the .prt file that contains the new geometry. The software imports the new geometry into the FEM file.

  3. Choose Home tab→Polygon Geometry group→Face from Mesh.

  4. In the Face from Mesh dialog box:Select the 2D elements in the region where you need to connect the parts. Here, we selected the following elements:In the Target Body group, click Create New to create a new polygon body for the new face.Click OK.The software creates a new face from those elements.

  5. In the Simulation Navigator, turn off the display of the 2D mesh and display all the polygon bodies.

  6. Choose Home tab→Polygon Geometry group→Stitch Edge to stitch together any free edges between the bodies. In this example, (A) shows the free edges between the two polygon bodies. (B) shows the bodies after we used the Edge to Face option in the Stitch Edge dialog box to manually stitch selected edges into the new face.

  7. Redisplay the existing mesh. Then, click the Update Finite Element Model command to update the existing mesh.

  8. Mesh the remaining geometry and then click the Update Finite Element Model command to update the existing mesh.
