Specialist Durability Plots scenario

The Specialist Durability Plots (SDP) scenario lets you visualize the specialist durability solution process results as 3D contour plots. It supports the following input definitions:

  • Specialist durability results

  • Specialist durability results - Time

  • Specialist durability results - Event

Each specialist durability data source is associated with one of these input definitions.

Defining the data

You can plot the following specialist durability result types, depending on the content of the data source. For more information, see Specialist durability result types.

  • Maximum, minimum, and mean stress, and maximum amplitude stress

  • Maximum, minimum, mean, and equivalent energy release rate, and maximum energy release rate amplitude

  • Cyclic fatigue damage and fatigue life

  • Fatigue lifetime and mileage

  • Design life factor and design load factor

  • Degradation factor, stress reduction factor, and stiffness reduction (2D and 3D)

  • Safety factor

  • Maximum and minimum temperature

The result type name indicates whether the result is:

  • Elemental, elemental-nodal, or nodal

  • Single scalar or multi-component scalar

After selecting the durability result type, a matching durability failure type result set is automatically selected which is used to filter the plotted results based on the failure type of the associated element or node. Because the specialist durability results do not contain the geometry or information about the model, the mesh source is retrieved from the FEM or AFM.

The following example displays fatigue life - element-nodal scalar results in duty cycles units. The minimum value of 4.2e3 duty cycles occurs at element (1).

Filtering scenario results

When plotting the durability results, you can apply different filters to focus on a selection of data in the specialist durability results. The available selection filters depend on the selected durability result type and its input definition. The selection filters include:

  • Local definition

  • Element result location

  • Ply ID

  • Result step (time step in a transient solution)

If you select more than one option for a specific filter, the software plots the results over all selected filters simultaneously. It plots the enveloped value for the common elements. For example, if some elements are common in multiple local definitions that you select when plotting the damage results, the software plots the enveloped maximum damage results for the common elements.

When the durability results are computed for a duty cycle event for which the order option is set to ignore event order, you can display the results for a single selected event with or without repetitions or for the accumulated effects.

Parameters

The following table lists the parameters available for defining Specialist Durability Plots post-processing scenarios. They appear in the Parameters node of the Scenario Based Data-Visualization Navigator.

Parameter Description
Within Endurance Limit Displays the elements with a stress value that are predicted to be in the endurance limit.
Fatigue Failure Displays the elements for which fatigue failure is predicted.
Static Failure Displays the elements for which static failure is predicted.
Display Elements Without Results Displays the edges of elements that have no result to display.Note: Some elements may not have any results because either the results were not requested or computed by the solver, or the results do not match the filter criteria that you applied to the parameters above. This option helps with plotting elements in the context of the overall model.
