Contact interference (Abaqus)

When you are working with Abaqus as your solver, you can use the Contact Interference command to define time-dependent allowable interferences for contact pairs and elements. You can use Contact Interference to model interference fits (press fits) when there are large overclosures between the contacting surfaces in the initial configuration of the model. The defined contact interferences can result in stresses and strains as the solver resolves the overclosure between the contacting surfaces.

In general, you should include a Contact Interference definition in a separate Solution Step from the rest of the analysis. Additionally, you cannot use Contact Interference in cases of self-contact.

Specifying the allowable interference

In an interference fit, the allowable interference value determines the tightness of the fit between the mating parts. With the Contact Interference command:

  • You can define a time-varying allowable contact interference by creating an amplitude with a table-based field.

  • You can define an allowable interference with the Abaqus automatic “shrink” fit method.

During the analysis, Abaqus applies the value of the specified allowable interference at the beginning of a given step and then ramps that interference down over the course of the step.

Associated Abaqus keywords

When you export or solve your model, the software uses the options you specify in the Contact Interference dialog box to define the *CONTACT PAIR and *CONTACT INTERFERENCE keywords in your Abaqus input file. For more information, see Modeling contact interference fits in the Abaqus Analysis User's Guide and *CONTACT INTERFERENCE and *CONTACT PAIR in the Abaqus Keywords Reference Guide.
