Define LS-DYNA 3D element material orientation

This topic describes how to use Mesh Associated Data to define material orientation for all 3D elements in a mesh.

When you define the material orientation vector for solid elements, you must orient the primary and secondary axes. The software derives the third axis automatically.

  1. Display the FEM.

  2. In the Simulation Navigator, expand the mesh collector that contains your 3D mesh.

  3. Right-click the mesh and choose Edit Mesh Associated Data.

  4. In the Mesh Associated Data dialog box, select the Set Material Orientation check box.

  5. From the Material Orientation Type list, select whether the material coordinate system will be Cartesian, Cylindrical, or Spherical.

  6. Use the coordinate system definition tools to define the material coordinate system. For information about the coordinate system definition tools, see CSYS dialog box.

  7. In the Preview group, select the Preview check box to view the material coordinate system for each element in the graphics window.

  8. Click OK to finish defining the material orientation.
