Laminate Composites > Material properties for laminate plies

Defining materials for laminate plies

A laminate ply can reference:

  • Isotropic and orthotropic Pre/Post materials

  • Fiber-reinforced and core ply materials created using the Ply Material object

A Ply Material is a laminate-specific object that assigns material properties to plies. It cannot be managed like standard Pre/Post materials.

Note:

When the laminate is validated, temperature-dependent material properties are evaluated at the laminate reference temperature.

Defining laminate properties for orthotropic materials

You can define laminate properties for orthotropic materials on the Laminate tab of the Orthotropic Material dialog box. Defining properties for orthotropic materials facilitates laminate modeling by allowing you to:

  • Define default ply properties by material, so that you do not need to define them in the layup and laminate modeler.

  • Define default draping properties by material, so that you do not need to define them in the Draping Data dialog box. The supported default ply properties are:Ply thicknessPly colorPly failure theory, including user-defined optionInterlaminar failure theory, including user-defined option

  • Invoke the improved woven model for Simcenter 3D orthotropic materials. The supported default draping properties are:Draping solverLock angleDraping pathZone angle tolerance

To activate the Laminate tab in the Orthotropic Material dialog box, follow these steps before starting NX or Simcenter 3D:

  1. Create a folder named startup, preferably on your local drive as performance may suffer on a network drive.

  2. Copy the file Advanced_Woven.udmpx file from the**[software_installation_path]/nxcae_extras/laminate/LamPropsForOrthoMat** location to the startup folder.

  3. Set the UGII_USER_DIR environment variable to point to the startup directory's parent folder.
