Create a sandwich structure

This example shows how to create a sandwich structure using the Extrude Laminate command.

Your FEM file must include a 2D mesh and a global layup. For this example, we defined the following global layup plies.

Global Ply Id Composition Thickness Angle Status Description Solid Property
4 Ortho_Sample 1.5 0 Up-to-date Layered
3 Polycarbonate 6.35 0 Up-to-date core Layered
2 Aluminum_2014 6.35 0 Up-to-date core Layered
1 Ortho_Sample 1.5 0 Up-to-date Layered
  1. Choose Laminates tab→3D group→Extrude Laminate .

  2. In the graphics window, select the faces that you want to extrude. These faces can be either polygon faces or element faces, or both polygon and element faces.

  3. In the Laminate 2D-to-3D Extrusion dialog box, in the Options group, select the Consider Offsets check box. This option considers the reference plane defined in the Layup Offset node in the Simulation Navigator, set to Middle by default.

  4. In the Sandwich Inflation group, select the Enable check box.

  5. Under Top Skin Mesh, select 3D.

  6. Under Core Selection, select Aluminum_2014 from the list. The Core Selection list contains both Aluminum_2014 and Polycarbonate because these plies contain the word core in the Description column. However, you can select only one core ply.

  7. In the Number of Core Element Layers box, enter 2.

  8. Under Bottom Skin Mesh, select 3D.

  9. Click OK.
