Define orthotropic thermal conductivity in a cylindrical mesh (Simcenter 3D Thermal/Flow, Electronic Systems Cooling, and Space Systems Thermal)
This example shows how to create an orthotropic material and define its orientation on a cylindrical shape.
This example starts from a cylinder with its axis is in the Z direction, and two shell meshes in two different mesh collectors. You do this procedure first for the cyan mesh collector then repeat it for the green mesh collector.
In the Simulation Navigator, right-click the 2D cyan mesh collector node and choose Edit.If you repeat this procedure for the dark green mesh collector, right-click the dark green mesh collector in this step.
In the Mesh Collector dialog box, in the Material row, click Choose Material .
In the Materials dialog box, from the Type list, select Orthotropic.
Click Create Material .
On the Orthotropic Material dialog box, type the Mass Density.
In the Thermal/Electrical tab, In the Thermal Conductivity X box, enter 0.1 W/m°C.On the cyan surface, this is the conductivity in the angular direction .On the dark green surfaces, this is the conductivity in the radial direction.
In the Thermal/Electrical tab, on the Thermal Conductivity Y box, enter 10 W/m°C.This is the conductivity in the axial direction.
In the Thermal/Electrical tab, on the Thermal Conductivity Z box, enter 0.0001 W/m°C.This is the conductivity in the remaining direction.
Click OK twice.
In the Mesh Collector dialog box, from the Material Orientation Method list, select Coordinate System.
From the Material Orientation Type list, select Cylindrical.
From the Main Conduction Plane and Direction list, select R plane, Theta direction. If you repeat this procedure for the dark green mesh collector, select Theta plane, R direction in this step.
From the Material Orientation drop down list, select Absolute CSYS .See CSYS dialog box for more information.
Click OK.
You can use the Finite Model Check Tool to view the material orientation you defined. See View material orientation graphically for more information.
