Beam resultants

Beam resultants are derived from element forces. Beam resultants are required for many beam post-processing operations, such as calculating complete stress results and displaying results on beam sections. To ensure that beam resultants are included in your results file, be sure to include a force output request in your solution.

Beam resultants are always displayed in the element (local) coordinate system. When displaying beam resultants, the Coordinate System option in the Result dialog box is disabled.

Mapping Pre/Post to Simcenter Nastran beam resultant components

The following figure illustrates the internal forces and moments for the CBEAM element:

The terminology used for beam resultants in the Post Processing Navigator does not match the terminology that the Simcenter Nastran in your .f06 file uses. The following table maps the internal forces and moments for the CBEAM element to the beam resultant terminology used in Pre/Post and the corresponding Simcenter Nastran convention:

CBEAM element forces and moments Post-processing Nastran .f06
Fx Axial Force NXX AXIAL FORCE
M1 Bending Moment MZZ* BENDING MOMENTS PLANE 1*
M2 Bending Moment MYY* BENDING MOMENTS PLANE 2*
Tx Torsional Moment MXX TOTAL TORQUE
V1 Shear force QXY WEB SHEARS PLANE 1
V2 Shear force QXZ WEB SHEARS PLANE 2
Warping torque WARPING TORQUE
Note: * For bending moments, the signs are reversed. That is, a negative value in Pre/Post is a positive value in the .f06 file, and vice versa.
