Expressions

System-defined and user-defined expressions

You can create expressions either from the context of a specific application or from the Expressions dialog box. Examples of specific applications include defining how force varies with time, or how Young’s modulus varies with temperature, or how the independent and dependent domains of a formula field are related.

  • A system-defined expression is an expression that you create from the context of a specific application. When you create a system-defined expression, you enter the formula for the expression, but the software names the expression and selects the appropriate physical quantity type for the expression automatically. The software also assigns the preferred data entry units for the physical quantity to the expression. System-defined expressions are also called system expressions.

  • A user-defined expression is an expression that you create in the Expressions dialog box. When you create a user-defined expression, you enter the formula for the expression, name the expression, select the physical quantity type for the expression, and select the units for the expression. The expression name cannot begin with a digit.

All system-defined and user-defined expressions are listed in the Expressions dialog box. Unlike fields, expressions are not listed in the Simulation Navigator.
