Hydrostatic pressure

Hydrostatic pressure is the pressure in a static liquid at a given depth. It is the result of the weight of the liquid acting on a unit area at that depth, plus any pressure acting on the surface of the liquid.

P=Psurface + ρgh

The pressure due to the liquid alone (the gauge pressure) at a given depth depends on the density of the liquid (ρ) and the distance below the surface of liquid (h). g represents gravitational acceleration.

P=ρgh

The pressure is created normal to the selected polygon face or element face.

When you define a hydrostatic pressure load, you specify:

  • The surface of the object that you want to apply pressure to

  • The surface and orientation of the liquid (the downward direction)

  • Liquid density

  • Gravitation constant

  • Surface pressure
