Computation of the local stresses

Each computation starts with the cross-sectional forces and moments that are used to determine the local stresses, which are decisive for the crack initiation in the spot weld. The local stresses are then computed based on the analytical solutions from classic beam, sheet, and plate theory. Rupp et al described in [3] two different cases for computing the local stresses depending on the type of failure mode that occurs:

  • Failure in the sheet

  • Failure in the weld nugget
