Influence of the distance of the stresses to the weld line
The methodology takes the distance of the structural stresses to the weld line automatically into account. Nevertheless, there is a modeling influence of this distance. To show this influence of the distance to the weld line, two models are compared. One model takes the structural stresses at a distance of two elements from the weld line (following figure, left side). The other model (following figure, right side) takes the structural stresses immediately at the connection (weld line). The latter modeling leads to higher stresses due to the influence of the geometry discontinuity of the completely simplified model at the connection. In this case the differences are still tolerable for an analysis of a complete structure, especially since the results are conservative. The differences in lifetime are still within a factor of two compared to the model with flanges modeled. [3]
