Create a 3D graph of a table field

You can create a 3D graph for table fields with independent domains that contain two or more independent variables.

Note:

If the tabular data for a table field is structured 2D data that was imported with the Imported Data is in Structured Data Format check box in the Table Data Import dialog box selected, you can construct the graph directly from the values at the tabular data points. For instructions on how to do so, see Create a 3D graph of a table field.

  1. In the Simulation Navigator, expand the Fields node.

  2. Right-click the table field that you want to plot and choose Plot(XYZ).The Field XY Graph3D dialog box appears.

  3. In the Table Field Options group, select the Plot at all tabular data points check box to supplement the lookup points that the software obtains from the settings in the Bounds groups with points in the tabular data. When the Plot at all tabular data points check box is cleared, only the settings in the Bounds groups determine the lookup point locations.

  4. In the Independent Variable 1 group, from the Variable list, select one of the independent variables against which to graph the dependent variable. For example, if the field defines pressure as a function of Cartesian coordinates, you select either the X-coordinate, Y-coordinate, or Z-coordinate.

  5. In the Independent Variable 2 group, from the Variable list, select the other independent variable against which to graph the dependent variable. For example, if you selected the X-coordinate in the previous step, you can select either the Y-coordinate or Z-coordinate in this step. Any independent variables that you do not select to use in the graph are referred to as control variables. To create the graph, you must specify numerical values for each control variable.

  6. In the Dependent Variable group, from the Variable list, select the dependent variable for which to create the graph.

  7. If applicable, in the Control Variables group, in the control variable boxes, type the values for the control variables.

  8. In the Bounds groups, in the Minimum and Maximum boxes, type values to define the ranges to graph for the independent variables you selected in Steps 4 and 5.

  9. In the Bounds groups, in the Number of points box, type the value for the resolution of points that the software uses to create the graph for the independent variables you selected in Steps 4 and 5.

  10. Click OK.The Viewport dialog box appears.

  11. Do one of the following:To create the graph in the graphics window, click in the graphics window. To create the graph in a new viewport, click .

  12. (Optional) To format the graph, double-click objects that you want to edit. Examples of objects that you can edit include the title, axis labels, axis ranges, among others.

  13. (Optional) To edit the graph style, colors that are used, and so on, double-click a curve or the surface.
