Turbulent boundary layer loading

Turbulent Boundary Layer (TBL) models are semi-empirical models used to compute the statistical properties of the pressure fluctuations induced by a TBL flow developing on a structure. In the Simcenter Nastran environment, you use the TBL models that contain global flow parameters to predict the structural or vibro-acoustic response of a loaded structure. For simple geometries such as a flat plate, you can evaluate the global flow parameters using semi-analytical models. For more complex geometries in industrial applications, you can obtain the flow parameters from computational fluid dynamics computations, such as Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS).

Modeling considerations

  • You can apply TBL models only on flat or low-curved panels.

  • The TBL applies under zero-pressure gradient.

  • The TBL flow parameters are spatially constant.

Numerical considerations

  • The orientation of the surface normals of the loaded panel elements, where TBL models are applied, must be consistent.

  • Duplicate nodes are not allowed.

Limitation

TBL models are useful for the early design stage of applications where calibration data exists. Typically, the models are calibrated from measurements for applications where the TBL flows over a flat surface.

Process overview

To convert loads from a TBL model to Simcenter Nastran loads with Model and Load Pre-processing:

  1. Specify and apply a TBL model with the Turbulent Boundary Layer Model command.

  2. Execute the Model and Load Pre-processing pre-solver that writes out files in different formats including an HDF5 file.

  3. Visualize the results with a preconfigured post-processing view.
