Extended mesh validity checking during import (Nastran and ANSYS)

When you import a Nastran .dat or .op2 file, or when you import an ANSYS input file, select Extended from the Data checking list (Processing Options group in the Import Simulation dialog box) to have the software check for the existence of each node on a given element in your input file. If any of an element's nodes are missing from the input file, the software:

  • Does not import the element.

  • Issues an error message when it first encounters an element with missing nodes. For ANSYS input files, the software lists all elements that have invalid entities, such as missing or invalid real constant values, as well as missing nodes, as shown below:**** WARNING **** The following elements have invalid data: (Element) |(Material)|   (ET)   |    (R)   |(Section) |  (ESYS)  | (Nodes)       272 |          |          |        3 |          |          |       294 |          |          |        3 |          |          |  25,26       646 |          |          |       17 |          |          |

  • Clearly lists that the element failed to import in the Analysis of Import report as shown below.

If you do not select this option, when you import a Nastran or ANSYS input file in which even a single node is missing, the import operation appears to proceed normally, though the software does not import the mesh.

Note:

Using the Enable extended data checking option can increase the processing time for importing an input file, particularly in larger models.
