Modeling symmetry using coupled degrees of freedom
In cyclic symmetric models, out-of-plane deformation typically occurs on cyclic symmetric cut planes. However, the nodes at equivalent positions on the cyclic symmetric cut planes will always have identical displacements and rotations, when the displacements and rotations are expressed in terms of a cylindrical coordinate system that is aligned with the axis of the cyclic symmetric structure. To enforce the equivalence of displacement and rotation for nodes at equivalent positions on the cyclic symmetric cut planes, couple the degree of freedom of each pair of equivalently positioned nodes.
Various solutions are available depending on the modeling requirements and the type of solver, including automatic coupling to couple the DOF of equivalently positioned nodes, which is available for all solvers.
