Detaching elements from a mesh
When you want to move the location of a set of elements within your model, you can use the Detach command to disconnect a selected set of elements from a mesh while retaining all the elements. You can detach 1D, 2D, or 3D elements from a mesh. Typically, you use Detach to disconnect a set of elements from one location on a part before you move them to a new location on the same part. You can then use the Attach command to reattach the elements into the mesh in the new location. For example, this command is useful when you want to change the location of a mounting bracket or a lug.
In the Detach dialog box, you can do the following:
Select the elements that you want to disconnect.
Specify the nodes on the selected elements where the detachment should occur. You can select these nodes manually, or you can have the software disconnect all connected nodes.
Control whether the software places the detached elements in a new mesh in the Simulation Navigator.
Detachment process
When you click OK or Apply in the Detach dialog box, the software does the following:
Creates duplicate nodes at the selected node locations.
Associates the selected elements to the duplicate nodes.
Detaches the selected elements from the mesh.
Locks the original mesh if that mesh is associated to the underlying CAD geometry.
Marks the original mesh as being partially associated to the polygon geometry. For more information, see Node and element association during morphing.
If you select the Create New Mesh for Detached Elements check box , the software places the detached elements in a new mesh. The mesh-associated data for this new mesh is identical to the mesh-associated data for the original mesh.
The detached elements remain in their original location. You can use manual element commands, such as Element Translate to move those elements to a new location.
