Apply nodal or elemental averaging
Turn on and off nodal averaging
In the graphics window or the Post Processing Navigator, select a post view.
Choose Results tab→Result group→Average On/Off .
Set up nodal averaging
You can set up nodal averaging across all adjacent elements for elemental and element-nodal results, for example, to provide a smoother display of stress and/or strain results.
You specify how to average the elemental results (results computed at element center and corners), including or excluding elements that reference different material property IDs, property IDs, element types, or feature angles (free faces).
For more information, see Averaging options for elemental and grid point results.
In the graphics window or the Post Processing Navigator, select a post view containing elemental or element-nodal results.
Choose Results tab→Post View group→Edit Post View .
On the Result tab, from the Combine At list, select Nodes.
From the Nodal Combination list, select Average.
In the Average Across group, select the appropriate check box to include or exclude elements in the averaging. To not include elements that reference different material property IDs, clear the MIDs check box. To not include elements that reference different property IDs, clear the PIDs check box. To not include elements of different types, such as shell or solid elements, clear the Element Type check box so averaging. To not include elements on different sides of a feature edge when the feature angle exceeds a specified value, clear the Feature Angle check box and enter a value the Feature Angle box.
To restrict the summation to the nodes in the elements displayed in the post view, click the Include Visible Elements Only check box.Note: You can limit the post view display to a group of elements by using the Show Only command on the group or by turning off individual meshes in the Post Processing Navigator.
If you selected to include feature angles, to use results for elements that have free faces, click the Include Internal Elements check box.
Click OK.
Set up elemental averaging
In the graphics window or the Post Processing Navigator, select a post view containing elemental or element-nodal results.
Choose Results tab→Post View group→Edit Post View .
On the Result page, set Combine At to Elements.
Click OK.
