Laminate materials for LS-DYNA

You can use options in the Laminate Modeler and Solid Laminate Modeler dialog boxes to specify properties for a laminate material for an LS-DYNA analysis.

Specifying the *KEYWORD option to determine how to model the composite

The option that you select from the Keyword Option list controls how LS-DYNA models the composite material.

  • Select *PART_COMPOSITE to use a simplified, newer method for defining composite layups. This method is available in the LS-DYNA 971 and later releases. If you select *PART_COMPOSITE, you can specify options, such as the element formulation to use, as well as values for nonstructural mass, and the number of integration points. You do not have to define the options for the *SECTION keyword.integration shell (older): a user defined thickness integration, with the input of relative thickness coordinates and weighting factors.

  • Select *INTEGRATION_SHELL to use an older method for defining composite layers. If you select *INTEGRATION_SHELL, you must use the SECTION_SHELL option to specify the appropriate SECTION_SHELL modeling object that defines the material direction for each integration point through the element's thickness.

Specify the Material option

The options you select in the Material Option group control how the software exports the laminate material to LS-DYNA.

  • To specify the ID of the LS-DYNA material to use, clear the Use Pre/Post Material check box and then type the ID of the appropriate keyword into the LS-DYNA Composite Material ID box. When you export the LS-DYNA keyword file, the software only exports this material ID. You must then manually append the material template keywords to the keyword file.

  • To use a material from the Pre/Post library, select the Use Pre/Post Composite Material check box . Use the Shell/Solid Formulation option to specify the shell or solid formulation output format when you export the laminate to LS-DYNA. For example:Select Layered to export the laminate as layered properties.Select Homogenous to export the laminate as unlayered, homogenous properties with equivalent orthotropic materials. With this option, the software computes the equivalent properties Use the Pre/Post Orthotropic Materials Mapping option to map the orthotropic material to an appropriate LS-DYNA material model.Laminate typePre/Postphysical property typeSupported LS-DYNA keywords for modeling compositesSupported LS-DYNA composite material models2D shelll**Part (laminate shell)**PART_COMPOSITEINTEGRATION_SHELL*MAT_ORTHOTROPIC_ELASTIC (MAT_002)*MAT_COMPOSITE_DAMAGE (MAT_022)*MAT_ENHANCED_COMPOSITE_DAMAGE (MAT_054-055)*MAT_COMPOSITE_LAYUP (MAT_116)3D solid**Part (laminate thick shell)**PART_COMPOSITE_TSHELLINTEGRATION_SHELL*MAT_ORTHOTROPIC_ELASTIC (MAT_002)*MAT_COMPOSITE_DAMAGE (MAT_022)*MAT_ENHANCED_COMPOSITE_DAMAGE (MAT_054-055)

Specifying the Hourglass option

The options in the HOURGLASS Option group let you specify hourglass control for the solution.

  • Select the *Use external HOURGLASS check box to specify the ID of the *HOURGLASS keyword to use. When you export the LS-DYNA keyword file, the software only exports this ID. You must then manually append the *HOURGLASS keyword to the keyword file.

  • Clear the *Use external HOURGLASS check box to select an HOURGLASS modeling object that defines the type of hourglass control to use as well as other hourglass properties, such as the type of bulk velocity.

For more information, see *HOURGLASS in the LS-DYNA Keywords Reference Manual.
