Simcenter Nastran SOL 401 Co-simulation with Simcenter STAR-CCM+

You can use the SOL 401 STAR CCM+ Co-Simulation solution type to enable a co-simulation between a Simcenter Nastran SOL 401 structural solution and a Simcenter STAR-CCM+ fluid solution.

  • Simcenter Nastran computes the solid displacement in response to the fluid loads (pressure and wall shear stress) computed in Simcenter STAR-CCM+.

  • Simcenter STAR-CCM+ updates the fluid mesh in response to the solid displacement received from Simcenter Nastran.

SOL 401 STAR CCM+ Co-Simulation supports the following subcase types.

  • Statics

  • Dynamics

  • Preload

Boundary conditions

The SOL 401 STAR CCM+ Co-Simulation solution supports all of the boundary conditions supported by the SOL 401 Multi-Step Nonlinear solution in addition to the Co-simulation Region simulation object. You use the Co-simulation Region simulation object to define the faces and edges whose structural displacements are imported into Simcenter STAR-CCM+ for the calculation of flow pressures. The Simcenter STAR-CCM+ fluid mesh is morphed to the deformed wetted structural mesh.

Co-simulation process

You use Simcenter Nastran to write out a Nastran input file from the SOL 401 STAR CCM+ Co-Simulation solution. You use Simcenter STAR-CCM+ to launch the co-simulation and to post-process the results.

For more details on the co-simulation workflow, see the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ User Guide.
