Material Failure Criteria Pages in the Orthotropic Material dialog box (Simcenter Samcef Structure)

The following pages lets you define failure criteria. For more information, see the Failure Criteria page in the in the Simcenter Samcef solver documentation.

Strength page

Failure Criteria
Failure Criteria Lets you select the failure criteria.You can choose between the Strain Ratio, the Stress Ratio, the Tsai-Wu, the Rice and Tracey, the Maximum Total Strain, the Maximum Stress, the Hashin, the Hoffman, the Tsai-Hill, the Puck, or the LaRC04 criteria.

Strain Ratio Failure criteria

The following options appear when you select the Strain Ratio check box from the Failure Criteria.

Strain Limits
Compression (XC1), Compression (XC2), and Compression (XC3) Lets you define the maximum compressive strain. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the DC parameter.

Stress Ratio criteria

The following options appear when you select the Stress Ratio check box from the Failure Criteria.

Stress Limits
Compression (SC1), Compression (SC2), and Compression (SC3) Lets you define the maximum compressive stress. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the XC parameter.

Tsai-Wu criteria

The following options appear when you select the Tsai-Wu check box from the Failure Criteria.

Stress Limits
Tension (ST1), Tension (ST2), and Tension (ST3) Lets you define the maximum tensile stress. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the XT parameter.
Compression (SC1), Compression (SC2), and Compression (SC3) Lets you define the maximum compressive stress. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the XC parameter.
Shear (SS12), Shear (SS13), and Shear (SS23) Lets you define the maximum shear stress. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the RST parameter.
Axis Shear Strength
Axis Shear Strength (U12), Axis Shear Strength (V23), and Axis Shear Strength (W13) Lets you define the axis shear strengths.In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the UVW parameter.
Tsai-Wu Coefficient
F12, F13, and F23 Lets you define the maximum compressive stress. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the FIJ parameter.

Rice and Tracey criteria

The following options appear when you select the Rice and Tracey check box from the Failure Criteria.

Rice and Tracey Failure Criterion
Rice Parameter (RICE) Lets you define the RICE parameter. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the RICE parameter.

Maximum Total Strain criteria

The following options appear when you select the Maximum Total Strain check box from the Failure Criteria.

Strain Limits
Tension (XT1), Tension (XT2), and Tension (XT3) Lets you define the maximum tensile strain. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the DT parameter.
Compression (XC1), Compression (XC2), and Compression (XC3) Lets you define the maximum compressive strain. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the DC parameter.
Shear (XS12), Shear (XS13), and Shear (XS23) Lets you define the maximum shear strain. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the DST parameter.

Maximum Stress criteria

The following options appear when you select the Maximum Stress check box from the Failure Criteria.

Stress Limits
Tension (ST1), Tension (ST2), and Tension (ST3) Lets you define the maximum tensile stress. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the XT parameter.
Compression (SC1), Compression (SC2), and Compression (SC3) Lets you define the maximum compressive stress. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the XC parameter.
Shear (SS12), Shear (SS13), and Shear (SS23) Lets you define the maximum shear stress. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the RST parameter.

Hashin criteria

The following options appear when you select the Hashin check box from the Failure Criteria.

Stress Limits
Tension (ST1), Tension (ST2), and Tension (ST3) Lets you define the maximum tensile stress. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the XT parameter.
Compression (SC1), Compression (SC2), and Compression (SC3) Lets you define the maximum compressive stress. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the XC parameter.
Shear (SS12), Shear (SS13), and Shear (SS23) Lets you define the maximum shear stress. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the RST parameter.
Axis Shear Strength
Axis Shear Strength (U12), Axis Shear Strength (V23), and Axis Shear Strength (W13) Lets you define the axis shear strengths.In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the UVW parameter.

Hoffman criteria

The following options appear when you select the Hoffman check box from the Failure Criteria.

Stress Limits
Tension (ST1), Tension (ST2), and Tension (ST3) Lets you define the maximum tensile stress. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the XT parameter.
Compression (SC1), Compression (SC2), and Compression (SC3) Lets you define the maximum compressive stress. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the XC parameter.
Shear (SS12), Shear (SS13), and Shear (SS23) Lets you define the maximum shear stress. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the RST parameter.

Tsai-Hill criteria

The following options appear when you select the Tsai-Hill check box from the Failure Criteria.

Stress Limits
Tension (ST1), Tension (ST2), and Tension (ST3) Lets you define the maximum tensile stress. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the XT parameter.
Compression (SC1), Compression (SC2), and Compression (SC3) Lets you define the maximum compressive stress. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the XC parameter.
Shear (SS12), Shear (SS13), and Shear (SS23) Lets you define the maximum shear stress. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the RST parameter.

Puck criteria

The following options appear when you select the Puck check box from the Failure Criteria.

Stress Limits
Tension (ST1), Tension (ST2), and Tension (ST3) Lets you define the maximum tensile stress. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the XT parameter.
Compression (SC1), Compression (SC2), and Compression (SC3) Lets you define the maximum compressive stress. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the XC parameter.
Shear (SS12), Shear (SS13), and Shear (SS23) Lets you define the maximum shear stress. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the RST parameter.
Shape Parameter (K01S)
Shape Parameter (K01S) Lets you define the shape parameters of the Puck criteria.In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the K01S parameter.

LaRC04 criteria

The following options appear when you select the LaRC04 check box from the Failure Criteria.

Stress Limits
Tension (ST1), Tension (ST2), and Tension (ST3) Lets you define the maximum tensile stress. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the XT parameter.
Shear (SS12), Shear (SS13), and Shear (SS23) Lets you define the maximum shear stress. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the RST parameter.
LaRC04 Parameters
Non-Linear Behavior of the in Plane Shear Components (SES) Lets you define the nonlinear behavior function of the in-plane shear components.In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the SES parameter.
Mode I Crack Release Energy for the Matrix (GIc), Mode II Crack Release Energy for the Matrix (GIIc), Mode III Crack Release Energy for the Matrix (GIIIc) Lets you specify the critical energy release rates (fiber direction, transverse direction, and out-of-plane direction).In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the GC parameter.
The Thickness Transition Between Thick and Thin Embedded Plied (HBAR) Lets you define the thickness transition between thick and thin embedded plied.In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the HBAR parameter.
Unidirectional Laminate Behavior (LOPT) Lets you define the unidirectional laminate behavior. You can choose between Computed In-Situ Strength (LOPT 1) or Measured Strength (LOPT 2).In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the LOPT parameter.
Fracture Angle Due to Pure Compressive Loading (ALFT) Lets you define the fracture angle (compressive loading).In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the ALFT parameter.
Friction Coefficient (ETAS) Lets you define the friction coefficient.In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the ETAS parameter.

Strength Limits

The following options appear when you select the Strength Limits check box from the Failure Criteria.

You use the following options to define the strength limits of the material.

Stress Limits
Tension (ST1), Tension (ST2), and Tension (ST3) Lets you define the maximum tensile stress. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the XT parameter.
Compression (SC1), Compression (SC2), and Compression (SC3) Lets you define the maximum compressive stress. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the XC parameter.
Shear (SS12), Shear (SS13), and Shear (SS23) Lets you define the maximum shear stress. In the Simcenter Samcef .MAT command, this corresponds to the RST parameter.
