Import LMS Virtual.Lab acoustic or vibro-acoustic models

Use the ImportVirtual.Lab XML Model command to import FEM or BEM acoustics or vibro-acoustics models created in LMS Virtual.Lab into Simcenter 3D Pre/Post. You can import a single model, or you can import several models at one time.

During the import process, the software generates a new FEM and Simulation file. The import process does not associate the data to a part file. Equivalent FEM or BEM entities are created and stored in the new files.

Export the LMS Virtual.Lab model

  1. In LMS Virtual.Lab (version 13.8 or later), in the Acoustics or NVH workbench, open your FEM or BEM vibro-acoustics model (CAT.Analysis document).

  2. Export it using FileExport Virtual.Lab Document. The output from the export process includes:Mesh and material properties files in .bdf and .xml format. This includes structural, fluid, and field point meshes.Data source files in .op2 and .unv formatDefinition and content of any groups in .xml formatIn addition, the Master.xml file contains all relevant details about the composition of the model.

Decrypt the exported model

The model that you export from LMS Virtual.Lab is encrypted. Before importing the model into Pre/Post, you can decrypt it using the vl2xml_decrypt.exe utility that is provided with the Simcenter 3D installation. If you do not decrypt your models, the import process does it for you.

The decrypt utility requires the Simcenter 3D desktop license feature (sc_enabled) and access to the Simcenter 3D license server. The easiest way to start the utility so that it has access to these functions (through the appropriate environment variables) is to use the Simcenter 3D Command Prompt.

  1. From the Windows Start menu, choose Siemens Simcenter 3DSimcenter 3D Command Prompt.

  2. In the command prompt window, type vl2xml_decrypt and press Enter.

  3. At the Enter file/folder to decrypt: prompt, enter the fully qualified path to the folder where your exported LMS Virtual.Lab model XML files are saved (for example: d:\myexportedVLfiles), and press Enter. When you enter a folder path without specifying a specific file name, the utility decrypts all files in the folder (including subfolders). Alternatively, you can specify a path and file name to decrypt a single file. For example, d:\myexportedVLfiles\myfile.xml.VLencrypted

  4. At the Enter output file/folder name or enter: prompt, enter the fully qualified path to the folder where you want to save the decrypted files, and press Enter. If you press Enter without specifying a path, the utility creates the decrypted files in the same folder where the original encrypted files are located, using the same file name root.

Import single or multiple LMS Virtual.Lab models into Pre/Post

  1. In Simcenter 3D, start the Pre/Post application, or open any FEM or Simulation file. You can also create a new empty FEM file. The import process does not use this starting file; it is necessary only so you can access the Pre/Post application where the import command is available.

  2. Choose FileImportLMS Virtual.Lab XML Model.

  3. In the Import LMS Virtual.Lab XML Model dialog box, in the Model to Import box, browse to the folder where your LMS Virtual.Lab files or folders are stored.

  4. Do one of the following depending on whether you are importing a single model or multiple models. To convert a single model, clear the Import All Models Under the Selected Folder check box. To convert multiple models, select the Import All Models Under the Selected Folder check box.

  5. If you are converting a single model, update the following:In the Model Name box, type a name to use for the converted file names. For example, if you enter NewModel, the Pre/Post files are named NewModel.sim, NewModel_assembly.afm, and so on. If you leave this box blank, the import process uses the folder name in the new file names. To create a log file of the import process, select the Save Log File check box. The log file contains a list of the LMS Virtual.Lab features that are converted. It is saved in the directory you specified, and the file name is prefixed with your entry in the Model Name box, or if you left that box blank, it is prefixed with the folder name.

  6. From the Units list, select the units you want the converted files to use.

  7. Click OK to start the import process.Note: If you are converting multiple models, a message appears that the progress of the conversion is displayed in a command prompt window. When the import process is complete:If you converted a single model, the Information window displays a summary of the process, the model opens in Pre/Post, and, if you selected the Save Log File check box, the log file is saved to the specified folder.Note: In the Information window, you can ignore warning messages about conflicts with materials and physical properties, such as: ***WARNING: Material conflict encountered during merge. First occurrence is MAT1 1.If you converted multiple models, a log file is created in the subfolder of each model along with the Simulation and FEM files. You can now open each model individually in Pre/Post.

Finish recreating your model in Pre/Post

The import process creates the FEM file with your meshes, physical properties, material properties, and groups. The Simulation file contains your imported or converted load function sets, load vector sets, solutions and solution parameters as well as Pre/Post equivalents. You need to create any missing objects in Pre/Post manually.

  1. In the Simulation Navigator select the Simulation file and make it the displayed part.

  2. Recreate any load and boundary condition objects that were not imported from your LMS Virtual.Lab model.
