Margin of safety
SOL 101 setup for margin of safety
The Margin of Safety solution process uses results from the post-processor to calculate margin of safety. The post-processor reads components of vector and tensor results like displacement and stress, respectively from the SOL 101 results file. The post-processor calculates derived quantities such as von Mises stress, principal stress, magnitude of displacement, among others from the vector and tensor components.
When you create the linear static solution that generates the results for the margin of safety calculation, you must choose one of the following solution types:
When the constraints are the same for all of your load cases, specify the SOL 101 Linear Statics - Global Constraints solution type.
When the constraints differ for some of your load cases, specify the SOL 101 Linear Statics - Subcase Constraints solution type.
Subcases
After you create the linear static solution, you must create a subcase for each load case for which you want the software to evaluate margin of safety. When the software solves the margin of safety solution, it performs the margin of safety calculation for each load case in the load case set.
For more information on subcases in a margin of safety solution, see Load case sets (margin of safety).
Contact
In SOL 101, contact is defined at the solution level. By default, the contact status at the end of a subcase is used as the contact status at the beginning of the next subcase. However, for margin of safety calculations, you typically want the subcases to be independent of one another. To override the default behavior so that the contact initializes at the beginning of each subcase, edit the global contact parameters.
Glue
Because glue is a series of multi-point constraints (MPC), you can use glue in your SOL 101 solution without restriction.
Output requests
The built-in methods for a margin of safety calculation use stress, force, or displacement results. However, you can optionally create your own methods. These methods might be based on quantities such as strain or strain energy density that are not included in the default output from a SOL 101 solution. To calculate such results, you must edit the structural output requests for your SOL 101 solution.
