Create a formula field

This procedure shows how to create a formula field from the Simulation Navigator.

  1. In the Simulation Navigator, right-click the Fields node and choose New FieldFormula.

  2. On the Independent Domain page, from the Independent list, select the domain type.In the dialog box, the independent domain table lists the independent variables.

  3. (Optional) Limit the range of an independent variable for the formula field. To type a minimum or a maximum limiting value, double-click the appropriate cell for the variable.

  4. (Optional) Change the units for an independent variable. To choose a new unit, right-click the units cell for the variable.

  5. If you select a spatial independent domain, specify the coordinate basis for the spatial independent domain.Select the coordinate basis from the available options in the Type list. For example, if you select Cartesian from the Independent list, your options are Global and Cartesian for the global coordinate system and a Cartesian local coordinate system, respectively.Use the available commands to specify the local or parametric coordinate system.Depending on the spatial independent domain you select, the coordinate basis options can include the global coordinate system, local coordinate systems, and parametric coordinate systems.

  6. On the Dependent Domain page, from the Dependent list, select the dependent domain.

  7. (Optional) Change the units for a dependent variable. To choose a new unit, on the Definition page, right-click a cell in the Units column in the expressions table.

  8. On the Definition page, in the expressions box, enter an expression that defines the relationship between the independent and dependent domains. Click Accept Edit when you finish entering the expression. If the expression is invalid, the software issues an error message. If you receive an error message such as a divide by zero error, see Specifying the default value for variables and plug-in functions for a possible solution.Note: You can double-click a variable in the Filters box to add it to the expression.

  9. Click OK to create the field.
