Adhesive universal connections in the Nastran environment

In the Nastran environment, you can use the Adhesive Connection command together with the Automatic Elements or Connection Elements commands to define and realize (mesh) adhesive connections between two flanges.

In the Adhesive Element or Automatic Connection Elements dialog box, you can specify the type of element to create to model the adhesive connection:

  • To model the adhesive with solid elements, select the CHEXA+RBE3 spider(s) option.

  • To model the adhesive with spring elements, select the CELAS+RBE2 option.

Modeling adhesive connections with CHEXA and RBE3 elements

With the CHEXA+RBE3 spider(s) option, the software uses Nastran CHEXA8 solid elements to model the adhesive. It uses RBE3 spider elements to connect the corner nodes of the CHEXA elements to the elements on the two flanges.

Modeling adhesive connections with CELAS and RBE2 elements

With the CELAS+RBE2 option, the software uses Nastran scalar spring elements to model the adhesive. It uses RBE2 rigid body elements to connect the end nodes of the CELAS element to the elements on the flanges.

When you select this connection type, you must also use options in the Adhesive Element dialog box to specify:

  • The maximum distance to the closest node.

  • Translational and rotational stiffness values for the CELAS elements.
