Laminate Composites > Inflating laminates

Extrude a 2D laminate to 3D

You must first create a 2D mesh and a global layup.

  1. Choose Laminates tab→3D group→Extrude Laminate .

  2. (Optional) In the Laminate 2D-to-3D Extrusion dialog box, modify the name of the extrusion setup.

  3. In the graphics window, select the faces that you want to extrude. These faces can be either polygon faces or element faces, or both polygon and element faces.

  4. (Optional) To limit the 3D extrusion domain:In the Cutting Face group, select the Enable Cuts check box.Select one or more polygon faces.Modify the Snap to Cuts Tolerance to specify which nodes are associated to the cutting face during extrusion.

  5. In the Options group, optionally do the following:To combine plies from a ply group or a laminate into one 3D mesh, clear the Single Ply per 3D Layer check box.To change the direction of the extrusion, select the Flip Element Normals check box.To export unlayered, homogeneous properties with equivalent orthotropic materials to the structural solver, select the Homogeneous Plies check box.Only plies that have the Solid Property set to Homogeneous in the Laminate Modeler dialog box or the Layup Modeler dialog box are exported as homogeneous plies. To perform the extrusion from a specified reference plane, select the Consider Offsets check box.Reference planes are specified in the Simulation Navigator under the Layup Offset node. To modify the reference plane to top, bottom, or middle, right-click the Top, Middle, or Bottom node and choose Set as Default. To create a reference plane, right-click the Layup Offset node and choose Create User Defined Layup Offset Rule.

  6. (Optional) To create laminates with sandwich structures, in the Sandwich Inflation group, select the Enable check box to specify the skin meshes and core layers.

  7. (Optional) To prevent the creation of degenerate solid elements when extruding thick laminates from a concave face, in the Normal Smoothing group, select the Smooth Normals check box.

  8. Click OK.
