Create a function definition

Use this procedure when your Simulation file already contains a specialist durability solution process, and optionally, a local definition.

  1. Make the Simulation file the work part and the displayed part, and in the Simulation Navigator right-click the specialist durability solution process node and choose Make Active.

  2. Choose Specialist Durability tab→Specialist Solution group→Function Definition , or in the Simulation Navigator, right-click the specialist durability solution process node or a local definition node→New Local Definition.

  3. (Optional) In the Specialist Durability Function Definition dialog box, in the Name - Description group, in the name box, set a name for the function definition.

  4. In the Analysis Setup group, click Add to List to open the Durability Simulation Objects dialog box and add the durability simulation objects, filtered by the Function Definition category, to the Durability Simulation Objects list.Click Reset to Default if you want to remove the objects you added to the Durability Simulation Objects list.

  5. From the Durability Simulation Objects list, select the simulation object that you want to define and do one of the following:From the Object list, select a value for the durability simulation object.Click Manage Objects to open the Durability Simulation Objects dialog box, filtered by the selected simulation object type, and select a durability simulation object.

  6. Click Location to select specific locations on your model to apply the function definition. If the function definition is attached to a local definition with a defined location, the solver checks for common nodes and elements in both the function definition and local definition locations and uses the position where the two locations intersect when solving the function definition, even if the nodes and elements are defined in strain gages. If the local definition’s location is set to None, or if the function definition is attached directly to a specialist durability solution process, the solver uses the function definition’s location.

  7. On the Location page, select one of the following options from the Location list:Select Element or Select NodeIn the Select Elements or Select Nodes group, select the desired elements or nodes in one of the following ways:Select the Group Reference check box to open the Group Selection dialog box and select or create one or more groups of elements or nodes.Click Select Object to select the elements or nodes in the graphics window.Click Stacked Smart Selector Methods to open the Smart Selector Methods dialog box that lets you specify the selection method to select elements or nodes for the function definition.Select Strain GageIn the Select Strain Gages group, click Strain Gage Selection to open the Strain Gage Selection dialog box that lets you select existing strain gages or create new ones.

  8. Click OK to close the Specialist Durability Function Definition dialog box.
