Create a Fluid Domain mesh

There are three parts to the meshing process with the Fluid Domain command:

  1. Define a Fluid Mesh type of Fluid Domain simulation object.

  2. (Optional) Define a Fluid Surface Mesh type of Fluid Domain simulation object.

  3. Inspect the Fluid Domain mesh.

Define a Fluid Mesh

  1. In the Fluid Domain dialog box, select Fluid Mesh from the Type list.

  2. Select one or more polygon bodies to model the fluid.

  3. Specify the appropriate fluid material.

  4. Select a Element Size Type and type an Element Size.

Define a Fluid Surface Mesh

To modify the mesh definition on some or all of the faces of a Fluid Mesh, create a Fluid Surface Mesh type.

  1. In the Fluid Domain dialog box, select Fluid Surface Mesh from the Type list.

  2. Identify the Fluid Surface Mesh Region by selecting polygon faces, bodies, or both:Select the polygon face(s) to apply the modifications to those faces.Select one or more bodies to apply the modifications to all faces of the polygon body or bodies.

  3. (Optional) Select Specify Local Surface Mesh Density to control the size of the fluid mesh where it contacts the selected polygon faces. If you select this option, then do the following two sub-steps. Otherwise, continue with step 4.Select an Element Size Type option.If you select Absolute or Relative, specify an Element Size.

  4. (Optional) Select Create Boundary Layer Mesh to create layers of wedge elements for the Fluid Surface Mesh. If you select this option, then select the Layers Thickness option. Otherwise, the mesh definition is complete.

Inspect the Fluid Domain Mesh

Since you cannot view the Fluid Domain mesh the same way you can view a 3D mesh in the FEM, it is good practice to use the following procedure to inspect the Fluid Domain mesh:

  1. Save your Simulation file.

  2. In the Simulation Navigator, right-click the solution containing the Fluid Domain and choose Solve.

  3. In theSolve dialog box, select Write Solver Input File from the Submit list.

  4. Click OK to generate the file. The Fluid Mesh monitor appears.

  5. Read the messages that appear on the monitor, checking for errors. You can view the message log later by using a text editor to open the file tmgmesh.log. Find the message log file in one of two directories:In the Run Directory (if one is defined on the Solution Details page in the Solution dialog box).In the directory where the software was launched (if no Run Directory is defined).

  6. If the mesh creation is successful, continue with the following steps. If not, review the information in Creating geometry for Fluid Domain meshing.

  7. In the Simulation Navigator, double-click Results to load the Fluid Domain mesh into the Simulation file and begin post-processing.

  8. Use the post processing tools to inspect the mesh. A successful mesh is all blue. Problem areas appear in a different color.
