Optimization objective function
The objective function is mathematically expressed as follows:
f(\Delta DV)=\min \left(\sum\limits_{i=1}^{N_T}A_i|\epsilon_i| + O \sum\limits_{j=1}^{N_{DV}}B_j|\Delta DV_j|\right)
where:
ΔDVj is the jth design variable change.
εi is the ith target error that depends on the design variable changes ΔDVj.
NT is the total number of active optimization targets that you set in the Correlation Details View subpanel for the Targets [#] node.
Ai is the weight of the ith target which is the product of the individual target weight and the overall weight for the target type of the ith target. You specify the individual weight in the Correlation Details View subpanel for the Targets [#] node. You specify the overall weight in the Overall Weights dialog box.
O is the overall design variable weight that you specify in the Optimize dialog box.
NDV is the total number of free design variables that you set in the Correlation Details View subpanel for the Design Variables [#] node.
Bj is the weight of the jth design variable that you specify in the Correlation Details View subpanel for the Design Variables [#] node.
The definition of the objective function implies that, for the same reduction in target errors, it is better to make a small change to the design variables rather than a large one.
