Lumped masses at the center of gravity
Select the Create Lumped Mass at Center of Gravity check box in the 0D Mesh dialog box to create a lumped or concentrated mass element at the center of gravity of a mesh or polygon body. When you select this check box, the software calculates the following:
The location of the center of gravity of the selected bodies or meshes.
The mass of the selected bodies or meshes.
For example, you can create a single element that represents the mass properties of the selected bodies so that you can idealize those bodies as a single mass value.
Supported element types
When you select the Create Lumped Mass at Center of Gravity, the type of element that the software creates is determined by your specified solver. You cannot change the element's type. The following table shows the type of element that the software creates for each supported solver.
| Solver | Element type |
|---|---|
| Simcenter Nastran, MSC Nastran | CONM2 |
| Simcenter 3D Multiphysics | Concentrated Mass |
| Simcenter Samcef | ConcentratedMass [Mass] |
| Thermal/Flow | LUMP |
| Abaqus | Mass21 |
| ANSYS | Mass |
| LS-DYNA | ELEMENT_INERTIA |
Creating a lumped mass at a different location
In the Nastran, Simcenter 3D Multiphysics, Simcenter Samcef, and LS-DYNA environments, you can also create the mass at different point or points on the model from the center of gravity.
You can create the mass at a location that is offset from the center of gravity. Use the options in the Offset from Center of Gravity group to specify the distance to offset the mass in the X, Y, and Z directions.
You can create the mass on a point that you select. Select the Create Element at Point option to select the point on your model where you want to create the mass.
Adding additional mass to the element
You can use the Additional Mass options in the 0D Mesh dialog box to specify an additional mass value to apply to the element to:
Add the mass value to the computed mass value for the bodies or meshes.
Apply the specified mass value instead of using the computed value.
