Laminate Composites > Creating a global layup
Create a global layup
This example shows how to:
Create a global layup that contains four symmetric plies of the same thickness and material.
Drape all the global plies over the same polygon faces using the woven draping solver.
Note:
You must have a FEM as the work part. Global layups are not supported in an AFEM.
Choose Laminates tab→2D group→Global Layup .
Create 2 plies by clicking Create New Ply twice.
From the Stacking Recipe list, select Symmetric.
From the ply layup list, select both plies that you just created.
Define the same material and thickness for both plies.
From the Material list, select a listed material or click Select material to choose a material from the material library or create a new material. Select the Ply Material check box to select or create a ply material.
In the Thickness box, type 0.15.
Press Enter to validate the thickness value.
From the ply layup list, select ply 2.
In the Angle box, type 45.
Press Enter to validate the angle value.
From the ply layup list, select both plies.
Note:
The status of the plies is undefined because the draping information is not yet defined.
Click Define Draping Input.
From the Solver list, select Woven.
Select the meshed surfaces that you want to drape with the selected global plies.
In the Ply Directions group, click Start Point.
On your model, select the starting point for the draping of the plies.
Select or create a vector that defines the alignment of the weft at the starting point.
The vector in this example was created by selecting two points. In the Primary Alignment row, from the Inferred Vector list, select Two Points .
Click OK to close all dialog boxes.
In the Simulation Navigator , right-click the global layup node and choose Update.
The Information window lists errors and warnings that arise during the draping process.
Close the Information window.
The elements shown in magenta indicate tearing in the layup.
