Continue a transient solution

After you run a transient analysis, you can continue the solution to a further time without re-running your analysis from the beginning. You can also change boundary conditions or ambient conditions, or continue the solution from an intermediate time step.

A transient converged solution or a transient paused solution is required. You must know the time of the last converged time step.

In this example, you will continue the transient Solution 1 which ran from 0 to 10 seconds, to run from 10 to 20 seconds.

  1. In the Simulation Navigator, right-click the Solution 1 node and choose Clone. Continuing a solution will overwrite any existing BUN result files and temporary files. By cloning the solution, you keep both sets of results.

  2. In the Simulation Navigator, right-click the cloned solution and choose Edit. The Solution dialog box opens.

  3. From the Run Directory list, select Solution Name.

  4. Click the Transient Setup page.

  5. In the Start Time box, type 10.This is the last time of the first run.

  6. In the End Time box, type 20.This is a new end time that the solution will run to.

  7. Click the Initial Conditions page.

  8. From the Initial Conditions list, select From Results in Other Directory.

  9. Click Browse and select the run directory for Solution 1.

  10. Click the Initial Conditions Selection group.

  11. From the Results to Use for Initial Conditions list, select At Specified Time.

  12. In the Initial Conditions Use Results at Time box, enter 10.

  13. Click the Restart page.

  14. Select the Perform Restart check box.

  15. From the Restart Files Location list, select Specify.

  16. Click Browse and select the run directory of Solution 1.

  17. Click OK.

  18. In the Simulation Navigator, right-click the cloned solution node and choose Solve.
