Contact and glue conditions > LS-DYNA contact

Specifying additional LS-DYNA contact properties

In the LS-DYNA environment, you can define several modeling objects to specify additional properties for contact. You can create:

  • Contact Card 2 Card 3 to define required contact properties.

  • Contact Card A Card B to define optional contact properties.

  • Controls to define properties for all contacts in a solution.

  • Contact MPP Cards to set parameters for contact analyses that are solved with the MPP version of LS-DYNA.

Defining additional contact properties for specific contact definitions

You can use the Contact Card 2 Card 3 and Contact Card A Card B modeling objects to define additional properties for an LS-DYNA contact definition.

  • Use the options in the Contact Card 2 Card 3 dialog box to define additional, required contact properties, such as the static coefficient of friction and the amount of allowable small penetration used by the contact algorithm.

  • Use the options in the Contact Card A Card B dialog box to define additional, optional contact properties, such as the scale factor used for constraint forces and the search depth used in the automatic contact types.

Note:

Currently, Pre/Post does not support LS-DYNA optional contact cards C, D, E and F.

After you define a Contact Card 2 Card 3 or Contact Card A Card B modeling object, you use the Card 2/Card 3 and Card A/Card B (optional) options in the Contact dialog box to apply them to the contact definition.

Defining contact control parameters for all contacts in a solution

You can use options on the Contact tab of the Controls modeling object to modify the default settings for various contact parameters for all contact definitions in a solution. For example, you can use the Shell thickness to be considered (SHLTHK) option to control whether LS-DYNA considers shell thickness considered in surface-to-surface and node-to-surface contact solutions.

After you define a Controls modeling object, you use the *CONTROL option on the Controls and Database tab in the Solution dialog box to include the Controls object in the solution.

The options in the Controls dialog box correspond to the LS-DYNA *CONTACT_CONTROL keyword.

Massively Parallel Processing options for contact

You can use the Contact MPP Cards modeling object to control how the MPP version of LS-DYNA performs contact calculations. In the MPP version of LS-DYNA, contact calculations are distributed between the available processors. For example, you can use the Number of iterations to eliminate initial penetrations (INITITER) option to control the number of iterations LS-DYNA performs to eliminate any initial penetrations.

After you define a Contact MPP Cards modeling object, you use the Massively Parallel Processing Cards option in the Contact dialog box to apply it to the contact definition.
