Understanding the import of Nastran SETs

This software imports sets defined with the Nastran SET Case Control command as Pre/Post groups. To better understand how the software creates groups from the existing Nastran sets, consider the following Nastran input file as an example. This file contains several sets for the entities 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

SET 1 = 1,2,3,4SET 2 = 1,2,3SET 3 = 1 THRU5SET 4 = 1,2SET 5 = 1,2,3,4,5SET 6 = 1SET 7 = 1,2,3$*  NX Group (nodes): xxxx  Name: SET xxxxSET 8 = 1,2,3,4$*  NX Group (elements): yyyy  Name: SET yyyySET 9 = 1,2,3SUBCASE 1     DISPLACEMENT = 1     SPCFORCE = 5SUBCASE 2     SET 1 = 1,2,3,4,5     STRESS = 3     STRAIN = 5     ELFORCE = 7BEGIN BULKPARAM,G99,2.0,3.0

When you import a Nastran model that contains sets, the software only retains the first occurrence of a given SET ID. Consequently, you should only use a SET ID once within your file. Additionally:

  • If a SET is only associated with a nodal output request, then the software only imports the nodes specified by the SET command. In the example, the software imports SET 1 into Pre/Post as a group that contains nodes 1, 2, 3, and 4.

  • If a SET is only associated with an element output request, then the software only imports the elements specified by the SET command. In the example, the software imports SET 7 into Pre/Post as a group that contains elements 1, 2, and 3.

  • If a SET is associated with both a nodal output request and an element output request, then the software imports both the elements and nodes specified by the SET command. In the example, the software imports SET 5 into Pre/Post as a group that contains nodes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and elements 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

  • If the Bulk Data section of the input file contains a PARAM, Gx,y,z parameter, then the software creates a group in Pre/Post with an ID (label) of x that contains all the nodes specified by SET y and the elements specified by SET z. The case control SET y and SET z will not get imported into Pre/Post. In the example, the software imports PARAM,G99,2.0,3.0 as a group with an ID of 99 that contains nodes 1, 2, 3 and elements 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. The software does not import SET 2 or SET 3.

  • If a SET is not associated with any output request but has an I-DEAS or Pre/Post comment that identifies the SET as either a node or element SET, it will be imported as such. In the example, the software imports SET 8 into Pre/Post as a group that contains nodes 1, 2, 3, 4, and SET 9 as a group that contains elements 1, 2, 3.

  • If a SET is not associated with any output request, the software does not import the set into Pre/Post. In the example, the software does not import SETs 2, 4, and 6.
