Create a seed set and generate streamlines

Streamlines are available when you set the color display to contour plot.

Generate streamlines

  1. In the Post Processing Navigator, right-click the post view and choose New Streamlines.

  2. In the Streamline Parameters dialog box, select velocity results from the results list.

  3. Click Create.

  4. Create a seed set using one of the methods described below.

  5. In the Extraction Parameters group, select the direction in which to generate streamlines relative to the selected seed points. Choose from Downstream, Upstream, or Entire Streamline.

  6. If the software fails to generate satisfactory streamlines, you may need to adjust the remaining extraction parameters:To increase the accuracy of the streamline, select the Limit Step Size check box and specify a maximum allowed step size. The step size is the value assigned to Δt in seconds. If the streamline is not complete, increase the Maximum Number of Steps or the Maximum Time Elapsed, where elapsed time is the sum of the Δt values assigned to steps.

  7. Click OK to display the generated streamlines on your model, or click Apply to create additional seed sets.

Selecting seed points from the model

  1. In the Seed Set dialog box, from the Seed Point list, select Select from Model.

  2. To limit selectable points to node locations, select the Select Nodal Location check box.

  3. Choose where you want to select seed points:If you choose Select Exterior Point, you can select any point on the exterior of the model. If you choose Select Point on Cut Plane, specify a coordinate system and axis, and use the slider bar to position the cut plane at the area of interest. Then select any point on the cut plane.By default, the software automatically generates a streamline and adds the seed point to the seed set. Clear the Auto check box to manually control streamline generation and seed point selection. You can select any seed point in the seed set list and click Remove to remove it from the seed set.

  4. Click OK to display the generated streamlines on your model, or click Apply to create additional seed sets.

Selecting seed points from nodal locations on a face or edge

  1. In the Seed Set dialog box, from the Seed Point list, select Select from Model.

  2. Select the Select Nodal Location check box.

  3. Choose where you want to select seed points:If you choose Select Exterior Point, you can select any face or edge on the exterior of the model. If you choose Select Point on Cut Plane, specify a coordinate system and axis, and use the slider bar to position the cut plane at the area of interest. Then select any face or edge on the cut plane.

  4. From the Pick list, select the method used to create seed points:Select All on Face to create seed points on all nodal locations on a feature face or cut-plane face.Select All on Edge to create seed points on all nodal locations on a feature edge or cut-plane edge.Select Sample on Face to create seed points on representative nodal locations on a feature face or cut-plane face.Select Sample on Edge to create seed points on representative nodal locations on a feature edge or cut-plane edge.

  5. If you selected Sample on Face or Sample on Edge, specify a minimum distance for sampled seed point locations. The minimum distance should be larger than the overall element size.

  6. Select a face or edge.By default, the software automatically generates a streamline and adds the seed point to the seed set. Clear the Auto check box to manually control streamline generation and seed point selection. You can select any seed point in the seed set list and click Remove to remove it from the seed set.

  7. Click OK to display the generated streamlines on your model, or click Apply to create additional seed sets.

Selecting nodes in a group or selection recipe

  1. In the Seed Set dialog box, from the Seed Point list, select Nodes in Group.

  2. From the Group list, select a group or selection recipe that contains nodes. The nodes are highlighted in the graphics window.

  3. Click Generate Streamlines to generate streamlines for all currently selected seed points.

  4. Click Add Seed Point to List to add the currently selected seed points to the seed set list. You can select any seed point in the seed set list and click Remove to remove it from the seed set.

  5. Click OK to display the generated streamlines on your model, or click Apply to create additional seed sets.

Entering seed points by coordinates

  1. In the Seed Set dialog box, from the Seed Point list, select Enter Coordinates.

  2. Enter the XYZ values for the seed point location.

  3. Click Generate Streamlines to generate streamlines for the currently specified seed point.

  4. Click Add seed points to list to add the currently specified seed point to the seed set list. You can select any seed point in the seed set list and click Remove to remove it from the seed set.

  5. Click OK to display the generated streamlines on your model, or click Apply to create additional seed sets.
