Follower force and moment load overview (Simcenter Samcef)

In the Simcenter Samcef environment, you can define a follower Force or Moment load that changes direction with structural displacements and/or rotations:

  • You can define a follower force or moment load that changes direction only with the rotations of the nodes it applies on.

  • You can define a follower force or moment load that changes direction with both displacements and rotations.

Note:

Follower loads are only available in the Nonlinear solution type of a Structural analysis type.

Note:

Follower loads make the stiffness matrix un-symmetric. So, convergence can be improved in nonlinear analysis if you enable the Non-symmetric solver (.SUB INLY 1) option in the Solver Parameters page of the solution. For more information, see Solution dialog box (Simcenter Samcef Nonlinear Analysis).

You can find more information on follower forces in the Simcenter Samcef solver documentation.

Follower force or moment load that change direction only with rotations

  • When you define a Force load of the Magnitude and Direction type, if the Method is set to Along Vector (FORCE), you can enable the Follower Force check box to define a force that changes direction with rotations.

  • When you define a Moment load of the Magnitude and Direction type, if the Method is set to Along Vector (MOMENT), you can enable the Follower Moment check box to define a moment that changes direction with rotations.

These loads are output as .CLM FOL deck cards.

Note:

As the direction of these loads varies only according to the rotations of the nodes, these loads will not follow if they apply on nodes of 3D volumes.

Follower force or moment load that changes direction with displacements and rotations

  • When you define a Force load of the Magnitude and Direction type, if the Method is set to Along 2 Nodes (FORCE1) or Normal to 4 Nodes (FORCE2), that force will change direction with displacements and rotations.

  • When you define a Moment load of the Magnitude and Direction type, if the Method is set to Along 2 Nodes (MOMENT1) or Normal to 4 Nodes (MOMENT2), that moment will change direction with displacements and rotations.

These loads are output as .CLM FOFO/FOMO deck cards.
