Geometry abstraction, polygon geometry, and convergent geometry > Creating polygon faces from meshes and face boundaries

Creating a face from a mesh by selecting elements

When you create a new face from an existing mesh by selecting individual elements, you can select 2D elements, a 3D mesh, or 3D element faces to define the new face. You can use smart selection options, such as Feature Angle Elements, to select the elements or element faces.

  • You can only select elements or element faces that are not associated to geometry.

  • The elements you select must have some free edges. You cannot use Face from Mesh to create a face from elements that form a closed volume.

Specifying a target body

When you create a new polygon face on a mesh, you must also specify the body with which you want to associate the new face. You can use the Target Body options in the Face from Mesh dialog box to:

  • Associate the face to a new body.

  • Associate the face to an existing body.

The software stores faces that you create from 2D elements in a different polygon body container in the Simulation Navigator than faces you create from 3D element free faces. Because of this, you cannot add a face that you are creating from 3D element free faces to a body that was created from 2D elements.
